Doing My First Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag! || Year 2020

Hi there! This is my first time doing this tag and I’m very much excited about it. It’s already July and we’re halfway through 2020. Whew! Time sure flies. So far in 2020, I’ve read 41 books and it has exceeded my initial Goodreads goal, which I’m super glad about! Out of 41 books, 30 of them are books by Asian authors. Besides, I’ve discovered so many Malaysian authors this year and some of them are debut authors! It feels so good to see more Malaysian authors are writing stories about the culture and the people in Malaysia and am so proud of them.

For the second half of 2020, I’m hoping to read more books by Black authors, I already have few books ready on my shelves. Also, I’ll try to finish the ARCs that I have and the books I bought this year (which is a lot!) I wish to reach 52 books count or maybe a book more than my last year’s total read which was 59, that would mean that I’m aiming for 60. Wish me luck!

Now, let’s get to the questions.

1. Best book that I’ve read so far?

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman and Second Sister by Chan Ho Kei. I cannot pick just one, you know that. Also, an important yet very emotional and shocking read, How We Disappeared by Jing-Jing Lee. (Of course I picked 3 books)

2. Favourite sequel so far?

Honestly speaking, I have only read Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. (At this point, a lot of people gonna throw spears at me for reading HP. These books have been bought and gifted to me and sat on my shelf for a while. I really wanted to read this series for as long as I remember, but I assure you that I’m in no way supporting JKR and her opinions and whatever f*** she says and does.) So, I actually stop reading at book 2 (hopefully I’ll pick up this series again but uhh, we’ll see) and I really enjoyed it and just happy to be able to recall the movie version of it. But that’s that, I wouldn’t put it as my favourite sequel since I have no other books to compare to it.

3. New release in 2020 that I haven’t read yet but really excited to?

I don’t think I have any 2020 new release that I’m particularly excited about. But I’m looking forward to read Girl, Woman, Other which was published last year.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

Again, I have no idea. I don’t really catch up with the new releases. I just basically go with the flow.

5. Biggest disappointment so far?

Hero by Zakri Rahman, joke of the century this one.

6. Biggest surprise so far?

My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite , just read my review, okay?

7. Favourite new to you or debut author?

Chan Ho-Kei. I read Second Sister and immediately fell in love with his writing and the way he builds the plot in Second Sister. One of the best writer in mystery thriller genre, I’d say.

8. Favourite fictional crush?

Dilan from Dilan 1990 by Pidi Baiq. Dilan is the real deal. He’s soft, patient, always there for you and he’s smart and poetic. Milea doesn’t deserve him, really.

9. Newest favourite character?

Tokue from Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa. Such a wise and lovable old woman. I miss her a lot.

10. Books that made you cry?

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa and Milea: Suara Dari Dilan by Pidi Baiq.

11. A book that made you happy?

House of Koi by Lilian Li and Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone (yep). Both of these books really remind me a lot of my childhood and reading them made me feel nostalgic and warm.

12. The most beautiful book you bought (or received) so far?

How We Disappeared by Jing-Jing Lee, Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan, House of Koi by Lilian Li and Kau, Aku dan Sepucuk Angpau Merah by Tere Liye.

13. Books that I need to read by the end of the year?

14. Favourite book community member(s)?

John from @johnisreading
Joseph from @bookieecokiee
Dayana from @dayanreads
Elvina from @elvinareads
Karam from @bookishskippy
and the list goes on, I’m forever thankful for the book community. Thank you for existing and willing to be my friend and bear with me.

That’s it guys for this post. Hopefully you have added some more books to your TBR and all the best to us for the second half of 2020. Take care!
