Stay a Little Longer (eARC)

Author: Dawn Lanuza

Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing

Released: May 28th, 2019

Genre: Adult, Contemporary

Pages: 256

Format: Netgalley (e-book)

Characters: Catalina (Caty), Elan, Jules, …

They were perfect strangers—all perks, no strings. Until they weren’t.

Elan wasn’t supposed to meet Caty. She lived halfway around the world, and he barely left Manila. Yet here he was, giving her a ride to the airport. Convinced that they would never have to see each other again after that day, Elan and Caty started to bond over truths, dares, stolen kisses, and games in hotel rooms and bars.

With brief encounters that turned them from acquaintances to friends — tipping to the point of lovers, always — will Elan and Caty keep settling for a day, or will someone finally dare to stay long enough to discover: Is this love?

Let’s be honest, at first reading this book, I was like, I’m not signing up for this. BUT- the story picks up pretty fast. It was no doubt I was swooned by the charming Elan, but I disliked Caty. I was like, “this bitch, how could she end up as the main character?” We’ll talk more about characters after this. Stay a Little Longer was simply an easy read, I flew by it in the matter of A day. For a slow reader, it’s FAST, trust me. I really like how the book is fast paced yet the plot is built up really smoothly. The romance that was happening between Elan and Caty was quick yet they took time to be together or to really admit their feelings. That’s what I like this book. It’s insta-love BUT- it’s a reasonable one. It’s not like, their eyes met and immediately, they would say, “I LOVE YOU”! I’m so happy it’s not like that.

Okay, moving on to the characters. There are not many characters in this book and the spotlight mostly going back to our main characters, whom are Caty and Elan. Elan is that boyfriend material, the nice guy and the prince charming. What not to love about him? Every girl would fall for him. Then, we have Caty, whom at first, I didn’t like at all. She was impulsive and sort of like a brat(?) BIG NO. However, as the story goes, I found myself falling for her character. I started to understand her better and even relate myself to her feelings and emotions. I understand her fear of getting into a relationship that she’s unsure about, I understand why she behaves the way she does. So, yea, I sort of liked her in the end.

Did I mention that I like the chemistry between Caty and Elan? I think they were made for one another. I strongly felt their connection and the conflict that was going on between them is simple yet significant. They were more than friends but not quite yet ready to commit in a relationship (at least for Caty) and at the same time, the relationship was definitely going somewhere and I live for that kind slowly but surely kind of thing.

Overall, this book is straightforward, nothing too complicated. It doesn’t have too much drama. I love how this book hits back to basic romance stories we all once loved. It’s simple and sweet. It’s about being scared of LDR, feeling uncertain about someone and I must remind you there are some steamy scenes (that is written so well! *squeals*) so, watch out for that.

Not to forget, I’m really happy to read a book that is based in Philippines (and New York) and has Filipinos as the characters. I’m so glad to be given this opportunity to read this book and thank you so so much Dawn Lanuza for writing this book and I can’t wait for her future works.

So, this playlist idea came up to me as I was listening to new Ed Sheeran’s songs and I think, well, there are 2 songs here, I just need to find a few more to suit the mood of the book. So, I don’t know about you but I think these songs sort of fit into my mood while I was reading this book. So, here you go, Stay a Little Longer Playlist:

  • ME! by Taylor Swift ft. Brendon Urie (Panic! at the Disco)

  • I Don’t Care by Ed Sheeran ft. Justin Bieber

  • Cross by Ed Sheeran ft. Chance The Rapper and PnB Rock

  • Drugs & The Internet by Lauv

  • Here With Me by Marshmello ft. CHVRCHES

  • I Can’t Get Enough by Selena Gomez, J Balvin , Benny Blanco & Tainy

  • Who Do You Love by The Chainsmokers ft. 5SOS

That’s basically it, it’s rather short but do tell me if any other song crosses your mind as you’re reading this book in the comments! 🙂
